Herald/Rice Lake

Daniel Herald opened the Herald Canoe Company in 1862 in Gore’s Landing. Daniel Herald was most known for his “Double-Cedar” design which he patented in 1871. His patent was actually for his canoe mold which was the first to use a covering of steel bands on a solid building form. When a boat was built over the form and copper nails were driven through from the exterior, the steel bands would cause the nails to clinch and fasten the boat together. This technology was used worldwide ever since for other all-wood designs as well as cedar canvas construction.

After Daniel died in 1890, the buisness was operated by his brothers under the name Herald Brothers. In 1919, the business was sold and moved to Cobourg, Ontario and operated as the Rice Lake Canoe Co. Later the company was moved to Montreal where it operated for a very short time before folding.

Throughout it’s life, Herald/Rice Lake always exhibited a great deal of style as can be seen from the ornate cast aluminum decks found on one of their cedar canvas canoes - see below.
